It’s only natural that most of the sports we watch in America hit their stride in the winter months. Summer is for baseball, but winter is for hockey, football, basketball and all kinds of other contests airing from around the globe. Which are the best of the best when thinking about all of this action? It is going to vary according to taste, but these 5 contests usually add up to the peak of excitement for sports fans watching on TV.
1. The NBA Playoffs. Some people say the NBA playoffs are simply too long. Eight teams from each conference get into the action and have a shot at the trophy. In that respect, it is the opposite of the baseball playoffs, in which a total of only eight teams make it. However, when you have the eight team format, priceless matchups occasionally turn up. Just think about the epic upset of the Dallas Mavericks by the Golden State Warriors in 2007.
2. The College Bowl Games. College football fans can argue about who gets into which bowl game and what it all means in the end, but the excitement of the big games over the holidays are definitely one of the highlights of the winter sports scene. You might wish they played in colder climates, but the tropical setting adds a element of intrigue for viewers in the northern parts of the country.
3. The Super Bowl. The Big Show, of course, is still the Super Bowl. Big companies empty out their savings and buy up the most precious ad time available when the show goes down. You’ll see the most clever ad campaigns (usually), but the game is what is driving most of the action. The glory of the NFL championship is at stake. Who will take it at the beginning of February when the dramatic NFL season climaxes?
4. The Stanley Cup Playoffs. Hockey still takes a back seat to the other sports in America, but few can deny the intensity of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, one of the best moments in TV viewing. It seems impossible how quickly the action is moving, and fans starting out will be hard pressed to even find the puck on the ice. However, once you settle in and follow the action, it’s well worth it. The fights which still occasionally pop up only add to the intensity. It is in many ways the most primitive of the sports.
5. The Winter Olympics. You only get them once every four years, but the Winter Olympics are thrilling enough to make it stick. When else can legends like Alberto Tomba (Bomba) capture our imagination? The jokes about curling will continue, but there is too much else going on to let it stop you from enjoying the show. Who will surprise the world in the next Winter Games? You’ll have to wait and see. When you have a setup like the Winter Olympics, it’s easy to be a spectator.
