Gary Hawkins hated his home alarm system. Not because he didn’t feel like it was worthwhile, or it didn’t protect his family, or because it was too expensive. No, Gary hated it because he was an extraordinarily lazy man, and he hated having to enter the code every time he entered the house. The idea of home security had originally been Gary’s, because he was worried about his young son and daughter’s safety, but he had balked once he learned he’d actually be required to punch in a five digit code every time he came home. When Gary came home, the first and only things he wanted to do were to kick off his shoes and take a nap on the couch. In fact, Gary wore sandals or went barefoot as much as possible for the mere fact that he could skip a step and get straight to the nap. It didn’t matter if he’d only been gone 30 minutes at the grocery store, and it didn’t matter if he hadn’t seen his family for several days…the first thing he was going to do was take a nap. Not only was Gary lazy, he was also selfish. So to him, it was absolutely ridiculous and cruel that there should be anything that came between him and his routine.
But his wife insisted, and so the home security system was installed. Weeks passed, then months. Gary quietly stewed in his hatred for the little box that mocked him every day with its insistence that Gary dutifully press the numbers 2, 3, 9, 2, 7 in the correct order. Gary could feel the seconds disappearing from his nap as he begrudgingly obliged the home alarm.
Normally, Gary didn’t like bringing his kids home with him, because they would often run around the house noisy with excitement during those first few mintues in which he was trying to fall asleep. But once the home alarm system was installed, he preferred to have his children with him when he returned, because those little balls of energy actually enjoyed typing in the code, which meant precious extra seconds of sleep for Gary. The fact that his children enjoyed pushing those buttons was incomprehensible to Gary, and even a bit worrisome to him in terms of their mental development, but he put it out of his mind and was thankful for the respite from the torture.
On one cold Autumn afternoon though, Gary’s mind was forever changed about his security system. He had decided when he left the house that day for work that he would not set the alarm, that he was done, that he was putting his foot down. He returned at 5:30 and felt like a free man as he breezed through the entry way not once pausing to even look at the box which had caused him untold minutes of misery over the past year. He could feel the soft leather of the couch and the warm quilt banket, but as he entered his living room, he saw two young men rushing out the back door carrying his television.
Gary was filled with rage, and felt a sense of violation. Not because his house had been broken into, but because he knew he would have to call his wife to tell her the news, and that a nap was now out of the question.
Ever since that horrifying day, Gary has not only been happy to set the home alarm system every time he leaves, but he has also entered the code with gusto every time he returns, because he knows that not only does it keep his house and family safe, it keeps his nap time secure.
