If you're a skier, snowboarder, skateboarder or any kind of action sports junkie, you know how popular adrenaline-filled sporting events have become. Their rise to prominence in the mainstream population has led to more and more television networks seeking to capture the highlights of major events. From the X Games to World Cup Snowboarding, Motocross and more, it's provided a new frontier for sports television coverage. As such, networks are ramping up HD coverage to match these sports' target demographic, which is much more likely to invest in high definition television equipment and programming.

Driving the move toward the mainstream adoption of action sports in television is the growing popularity in ski and snowboarding events. This can be seen by the promotion and success of ESPN's X-Games, and the growing audience for the Winter Olympics. As freestyle and trends have been adopted into competitions, the television audience has continued to grow. Perhaps more in this category of sports than any other, viewers seek to have a high frequency of HD TV coverage. Perhaps this is due to the scenic nature of the events (e.g. skiing and snowboarding in an alpine mountain setting), or perhaps since the target demographic simply owns HD TV's at a higher level than mainstream sport contemporaries.

Unlike mainstream sports, there aren't a multitude of subscription services available on satellite TV or cable. With football for example, subscribers can have access to every game and a variety of commentary by signing up for NFL Sunday Ticket. The programming package isn't cheap, but the high number of NFL fans drives substantial demand for the product every season. The same can be seen with NBA League Pass, NHL Center Ice and MLB Extra Innings. Although these types of subscription packages are available in high def, there just hasn't been the demand yet for action sports packages. For now, programming is contained to networks like VS, Altitude, and other demographic-targeted channels like Spike TV, as well as sports programming offshoots like ESPN 2 and ESPN Classic.

Although the rise in action sports has led to increased the television audience for major events, it has been slower to catch on with major networks. Only Olympic events are showing action sports on network television, although this might be a changing trend. For example, the snowboarding freestyle event was one of the most watched events of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. This event was broadcasted on NBC in high definition, and it may convince networks that the audience for action sports programming is large enough to schedule in off-year World Cup and X-Games events.

If you're an action sports fan, the best way to get all the coverage you're looking for is with a programming package on satellite tv. Whether you're installing a dish for your home, or considering putting in direct tv for business, it can bring the best of action sports and all other types of sports programming directly to your HD TV.
