Chloe Sevigny is one of the most underappreciated actresses of the present day. The Connecticut native first made a splash in the 1990s, becoming a darling of the fashion world and partying her way through the heady New York scene. Now in her mid-30s, she slowly began to reveal herself as a serious actress, and now is respected intensely by fans of independent cinema. If you know to look for her, you will see her all over satellite TV the next time that you decide to flip through some channels. If you become a fan of hers, as you almost certainly will, here are a few of her best and most controversial works to check out.
1. Boys Don’t Cry
Boys Don’t Cry is most known for Hillary Swank’s star-making portrayal of a woman who wants to become a man, cross-dressing and trying to pass as male in a small town environment that is far from accepting. But Sevigny shows a strong performance in this film as well, playing Swank’s lover, one of the only people in the entire film who accepts him during the transition. Sevigny’s performance is strong, and this film is worth watching if it comes on satellite TV regardless of whether or not you are a fan! Just be prepared with a box of tissue nearby: this one is a tear-jerker, and you are likely to ball your eyes out before it is over.
2. Big Love
This HBO series about Mormons is one of the best television series on satellite TV these days. The show is just about to enter its fifth and final season, but you can catch up by recording past episodes with your DVR when they play on satellite TV. The show centers around the life of Bill Henrickson, a business owner in suburban Salt Lake City, and his three wives, played by Sevigny, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Ginnifer Goodwin. Sevigny’s character, Nicolette Grant, is wife number two. She came into the relatively normal, middle class Henrickson family (aside from the whole polygamy thing) after a childhood spent on a strictly religious Mormon compound in rural Utah, which was ruthlessly ruled by her father. Seeing Sevigny, who is normally known as a Manhattan fashionite, wearing white, long-sleeved blouse tucked into an ankle-length skirt with a long, braided ponytail is a trip in itself. Such an intense departure from her normal "type" shows how great of an actress that she really is.
3. The Brown Bunny
This Vincent Gallo film is one of the most controversial pieces of cinema to debut in American movie theaters in a long time. If you see it casually playing on your satellite TV, you very well might end up viewing a censored version of it. This is because it features a long scene of fellatio at the end that simultaneously shocked and bored critics. Some found it obscene and in bad taste. Others, such as the unstoppable Roger Ebert, dismissed it as simple controversy baiting by Vincent Gallo. Watch it for yourself the next time you see it on satellite TV and decide for yourself!
