It is no secret that wireless Internet has revolutionized the way that companies operate. Everything from internal communications and record-keeping, to the way in which businesses contact potential clients, to the main methods of advertizing and marketing have completely changed in the past couple of decades. The rise of social media websites like Facebook and Twitter have given companies brand new platforms through which to spread their messages and form their brand image in the minds of the public as well, Wireless Internet can be thanked (or blamed) for almost every single one of these changes.

Not only has wireless Internet caused older companies to revitalize and alter their former practices, but this crucial technology has also made possible the existence of some of today´s sexiest and most cutting edge businesses that could not have existed in a previous time. Their business models are so dependent on the Internet and the way that it works, that they can truly thank these technologies their existence. Here are some of the most dynamic companies that have risen out of the Internet.

Groupon

Some business experts call this wireless Internet company the fastest growing company in the history of the world. It started with a few business students from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, a suburb directly north of Chicago. They wanted to start a social change website called the Point in which people would volunteer to donate to a given cause, but their credit cards would only be charged if enough people volunteered to donate to reach a certain tipping point. The website did not quite take off, so instead they changed their model to be about Americans´ favorite pastime: consuming. Now, businesses offer deals to email list subscribers, two-for-one sub sandwiches for example, but the deal is only good if enough people sign up, or "group on". Started only a few years ago, Groupon now has locations around the world, and has offices in multiple cities and countries. They added more than 500 employees last year in Chicago alone! So much for the recession.

Etsy

This website has allowed thousands of amateur home-designers and crafts people to finally have a platform through which to sell their wares. Everyone has an aunt or a friend or a coworker who shows a remarkable talent for sewing, or who makes the most delicious homemade jams. These talents were often reserved for gift-giving, and inner-family exchanges. Now, these very same people can simply create an account and sell their goods online!

EBay

This is the original online shopping website, and one of the most successful stories in the history of wireless Internet. The idea is that people can sell items that they want to the highest bidder in an online auction. This has allowed thousands of people to clear out basements filled with junk (other people´s treasure, naturally). It has also allowed collectors and hobbyists to find all manner of rare items that they never would have been able to get their hands on browsing the bins of the local resale shop. Instead of their immediate surrounding area, they now have the whole world at their fingertips.
