With so many Americans unemployed, crime rates all over the country have soared. Many theft rates have increased because people don’t have the capacity to support themselves financially, but in other cases, crime rates have simply risen because the unemployed are bored and looking for thrills. No matter why crime rates have gone up, however, the reality is that crimes are occurring on a more frequent basis all over the country. In order to address that reality, Americans need to increase their home security by taking the following five important steps:
5. Keep a list of important phone numbers located in a handy location in your house. If an emergency happens, you’ll know to call 911, but there may be other important people that you want to be able to call as well. If you have kids, then it’s a good idea to place 911 stickers near your phone and on your refrigerator because you never know if they’ll remember that number when an emergency happens. If someone is babysitting, then be sure to leave them with a list of essential phone numbers so they can reach you or other important people if anything goes wrong.
4. Get a fence that goes around the perimeter of your property and encloses it. By putting up a physical barrier in your yard, you increase your home security by making it much more difficult for anyone to even get near your house. When criminals can’t easily walk up to your house, they’re going to be much less likely to try to break in.
3. Pay a team of trained security professionals to install a home alarm system in your house. These professionals should have the knowledge, training and experience to determine what kind of home alarm will protect your property the best and what areas of your house may need additional enforcements. With an alarm installed, you can just type your password in or push a button to turn it on, and then when you leave your house you’ll know that criminals won’t be able to get in without setting the alarm off. If you don’t have an alarm, then criminals can simply break a window or door to get into your house and steal from you while you’re out of your house.
2. Add a system of video cameras to your home security system. With these cameras placed in strategic places around your property, you’ll be able to capture videos of everything that takes place in the area. If anyone manages to get past your alarm and break into your house, then you’ll have video evidence that can help the police identify the thieves, which may lead to their arrest and help keep them locked up behind bars.
1. If you leave on vacation, make sure you ask a friend or hire someone to pick up your mail and newspapers while you’re away. Leaving things that are delivered to your house can signal to criminals that no one is around, which makes them feel as though they can break in without running the risk of getting caught.
