When it comes to getting a presence established online, too often, people tend to be focused on the fact that they think they should be concerned with all of the design elements alone. The fact is that yes, it is quite important how a website looks and how it reacts to someone who is searching it. But at the same time, it is also crucial to get people to where they need to be without incident, and that this is much easier to accomplish when someone is actually focused not just on how things look, but on what the title is in the first place that brings people where they need to be. So for this reason, choosing domain names is an important step in developing an online presence. Here are five ways to choose ones that get the job done.

#1 - Go with the shortest possible decipherable title. Too often, people get way too into the idea of overly specific domain names that are going to distinguish their sites from other sites. And while that's great to be a special presence on the web, having someone in a position where they have to remember tons of words is never a good idea, since the human mind tends to remember shorter, snappier things a whole lot better than long and convoluted ones. So choose something short without sacrificing the ability to actually understand what it means, and see how well that ends up working out.

#2 - Use the .com. People are not going to be searching around for .net or .edu domain names, and unless all of those have been purchased, too, and then set to mirror to the .com, there is no reason to be involved with them in the least. Go with the .com and ensure that people will be where they need to be.

#3 - Use something that is similar in name to the project or the band or the business. While it might seem like a lovely idea to forgo using the name of a band for a catchy phrase (and ditto for other business endeavors), the fact is that most people are not going to remember that catchy phrase, unless the site is part of a multinational corporation that is doing an advertising campaign.

#4 - Check to see if other similar domain names are going to be stealing traffic. If one or two keystrokes' difference equals someone else's comparable business that is going to be able to attract customers away, it might be a far better idea to ensure that the name is markedly different, rather than getting swept up in that whole thing.

#5 - Don't use symbols and numbers. It's difficult for people to remember whether or not they are spelling something out or typing something that stands in for something else, so there's absolutely no reason to get involved in throwing in other more complicated objects to the mix, as it is an easy way for someone to miss out on getting to the proper URL.

It's important to register domain name sooner rather than later. For merchant accounts and other particular content, a little extra might be needed, too.
