One would think that with twenty-four hours to kill every day, cable news networks would be able to devote themselves to in-depth studies of the major issues of the day. Hour-long programs on the Israeli-Arab conflict, for instance, would be typical daytime programming. However, probably due to the need for higher ratings that drives all television programming, salacious stories and gossip are generally much more the order of the day. Tailor-made for satellite TV coverage are the shocking revelations concerning former California governor and movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Arnold Schwarzenegger's rise to fame has been truly bizarre, and, as some would say, truly American. Schwarzenegger of course first found fame as a bodybuilder during a time when the sport, and the idea of physical fitness in general, was still somewhat foreign to many Americans. It may be hard to believe in this day and age with a Planet Fitness or Gold's Gym on every corner, but Schwarzenegger is one of the reasons that we take gym memberships for granted today. Schwarzenegger eventually transitioned from bodybuilding into action movies such as "Predator," "Commando," and the "Conan the Barbarian" series before finding his way into comedies such as "Twins" and "Kindergarten Cop." Schwarzenegger's most famous films, of course, are the "Terminator" series, which are sure to be running on a satellite TV channel somewhere at any time of day.
Schwarzenegger had been a member of the Republican party for quite some time, but had never held political office before running for the California governorship in 2003. The California election that year was quite strange, being that the election that year was to replace incumbent Gray Davis, who had been recalled under a California ballot initiative. The special election to replace him was, for lack of a better word, a circus, with candidates from porn stars to former child actor Gary Coleman appearing on the ballot. In this kind of Hollywood environment, it was only natural that a Hollywood superstar would be chosen to replace Davis. Eventually, Schwarzenegger was elected to a new term as governor in his own right several years later.
Recently, Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Kennedy family member Maria Shriver, announced that they would be splitting up. Within a few days, all speculation about the reason for the breakup was apparently resolved when it was revealed that Schwarzenegger had fathered a child with a family housekeeper more than a decade ago. Somehow, Schwarzenegger had successfully managed to keep this news from his wife, and keep it a secret during his entire term as governor, while paying some sort of child support all the while. Given the unusual path to success Schwarzenegger has followed all his life, it's perhaps not surprising that he thought he could keep this secret hidden forever. However, it seems that more new revelations are coming to light every day, and like it or not, you can follow this story on satellite TV by watching the major cable news networks.
