It's not easy being a woman, especially when it comes to being portrayed on television. Some programs do a fine job of painting the portrait of the modern, independent woman, while other programs, ironically, the majority of so-called reality shows, depict the images of women less respectfully. But when you grow tired of watching sports with your husband, it can be nice to unwind with one of television's most tantalizing diversions. What better way to get in tune with one's female identity than buy guiltily indulging in Bravo's reality series, The Real Housewives of... (insert ridiculously wealthy local here).

So far The Real Housewives program has covered the lives of wealthy, primarily by marriage, women in Orange County, New York City, Atlanta, and New Jersey. Some are mothers, while others have never experienced the joys of childbirth nor childrearing. Then again, it might be fair to say that some of the mothers have never actually participated in these actions either. Even still, every time that you sit down in front of your own high definition television to be strategically introduced to these women and their luxurious, yet somehow dramatic lives, you will find yourself wanting to see more.

It would be easy to generalize and say that all of the housewives are the same, but by watching just a few episodes of the show you quickly learn that they are not. Some are career women, although some simply work to fulfill some kind of desired family dynamic, while many are stay at home mothers devoted to caring for their young, to young adult children. The majority of the housewives are in their late 30s or older, so this can play out interestingly depending on where you the viewer are at in your life.

If you are younger, The Real Housewives can serve as a model of what to do and what not to do not only as a parent, but as a woman in general. Sure, these women have money, but it is easy to be concerned for their seemingly non-existent rationality and intellect. If you happen to be a more mature, that is, older woman, these women will not make you feel too much better about your own appearance, as most of them have undergone at least some form of plastic surgery. Honestly though, what woman wouldn't improve her appearance if she knew that America would be criticizing her slightest wrinkle in front of their HD televisions. Nonetheless, even the elder woman can fight back by saying, "hey, at least I have a conscience!"

But that is the irony in watching this highly addictive program. The show is so good at devaluing any shred of dignity that women have and it is disagreeable in so many ways, yet you continue to watch it, adding it to your growing list of trashy television guilty pleasures. Really though, there is a lot to learn from The Real Housewives, mostly in regards to what not to do with your life. Spending a few hours watching this program, of course, shouldn't cause too much damage.
