Whether you live in the booming city of Forth Worth or in a rural area in western Texas, chances are you have some kind of access to a nice cell phone. Perhaps you even have a 4G phone, which allows you to surf the web from anywhere you go because of its wide range of networks and providers.

It is truly amazing to think of how far our society has come form only a few decades ago. People used to have to call bars and restaurants from pay phones if they were trying to track down a friend. Those who were ignoring someone could say that they missed a call without arousing major suspicion and skepticism.

But just about since telephones were invented, they have been a popular center of many films and television programs. Some of these involve people adapting to new technologies. Others involve simplistic plots given a twist with the addition of a 4G phone. But you will see this soon enough. So without further ado, here are some of the best uses of the telephone in modern cinema and television:

1. Mean Girls
This movie about a click of high school girls came out in 2003, before the ascendency of Facebook or Twitter or 4G phones (and before its lead star Lindsay Lohan was a total trainwreck). But it still managed to capture the technology dependence of the day. In one memorable scene, the girls in the toxic group of four chit-chat the night away, calling each other through an elaborate series of secret conference calls so that they can hear what the other girls have to say about them. While the movie’s central clique seems crazily manipulative and absurd, there are probably a few teenage girls who might recognize themselves in this kind of behavior. Teen bulling on wireless Internet has only gotten worse since then unfortunately.

2. The Ring

The isolated ringing phone can always be scary. This horror film staring Naomi Watts, however, makes it all the more terrifying, as it is one step in the process by which you know you are going to do die in exactly a week. Many people who watch the movie jump the next time they hear a telephone ring, because they find it so startling!

3. The Wire

Some call this HBO drama one of the best crime series of all time. Over its five seasons, the Wire follows an assorted cast of criminals, police officers, and lawyers. The detectives conduct slow, high-intelligence operations to bring down entire criminal networks. Largely, they use phone taps, also known as "wires" – hence the name of the show. They will literally spend hours just sitting and listening to phone 10-second, heavily coded phone calls between drug dealers and shipping thieves.

4. Pillow Talk

This 1959 classic movie starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day is about party telephone lines – when people used to have to share one connection between apartments or between houses. It is one of the original "battle of the sexes" romantic comedies of the day, when the genre was at its peak.
