It has been said that laughter is good for the soul and studies have even suggested that being in good spirits also boosts overall well-being. Many people, however, are tied to the desk all day and work in stressful environments. Balancing a family and a social life makes things even more difficult. This is just where the entertainment industry steps in, creating movies and television series that air on satellite TV and making viewers crack up in laughter every night of the week.

When television first took off as an industry following World War II, the focus was on transmitting news and family-friendly entertainment for everyone. The sitcom thus emerged as a popular type of programming because it allowed households to sit down in front of the tube together. At the same time, it was difficult for scriptwriters to push the envelope because every transmission had to be appropriate for audiences of all ages. In the 1970s and 1980s, things started to change as cable and satellite TV were established as alternatives, able to send content into viewer living rooms without having to deal with the restrictions of traditional broadcast networks.

In the context of greater broadcasting freedom, cable network offerings that started with sports and some movies quickly branched into many new areas. Comedy has thus emerged as a popular genre for audiences everywhere. After all, it is much easier for comedians to crack jokes when there is no need to worry about whether or not they are being political correct or using inappropriate language. ‘The Daily Show,’ hosted by Jon Stewart, became a prime example of this sort of programming. Comedy Central then began showing the spin-off, ‘The Colbert Report,’ which has also been wildly successful.

Comedic movies are also easy to find, from before and after the transition to high definition. If you are looking for an entirely new take on the romantic comedy, check out ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ (2008). A television actress breaks up with her music-scoring boyfriend to date a famous musician. The broken-hearted boyfriend heads to Hawaii to escape, where he runs into the couple. Although you can probably predict the overall outcome of the plot, it is impossible to anticipate all of the silly punch lines and truly humorous situations that develop. And, while some parts of the story are clearly far-fetched, they contain elements that anyone who has been in a serious relationship can relate to, and laugh about now.

Another romantic comedy that promises more laughs than sappiness is ‘Knocked Up.’ Released in 2007, it did just fine at the box office, although it is the showings on DVD and satellite TV that have allowed millions more to uncover this funny film. The basic premise is that a focused professional woman working in news entertainment decides to let loose one night, only to end up with an unintended pregnancy. Working together with the immature, soon-to-be father, in the hopes of creating a family of sorts, the side-splitting scenes will make you chuckle even the second or third time around.
