If you are living in an apartment or condo that you rent from a landlord then there are different security measures that you must take in order to keep yourself and your possessions safe than if you own your own apartment, condo or home.
First of all, when you are a tenant one places a lot of the responsibility on the landlord or management company to make sure that the apartment is safe for living. This includes things like making sure that there is no lead in the paint that is used to paint the walls and ceilings of the apartment, that there is no asbestos in the walls and ceilings, that all of the fixtures are installed properly, that there are railings and guards where there needs to be for city building codes and that there are smoke detectors in all of the rooms. All of these things are integrally important for landlords to take care of for their tenants home security because they can all lead to serious health problems or even death if not treated properly.
For instance, asbestos, when inhaled in substantial qualities over a period of time by humans and animals, leads to serious health problems. These health problems can include various types of lung cancer that can lead to death. Asbestos is often undetectable by the naked eye and used to be used a lot in construction of homes and buildings so if you move into a place you could have no idea if your apartment is contaminated with the deadly fibers. For this reasons its important that landlords get professionals into the building to check for the fibers and if the asbestos fibers are present, the landlord must get them professionally eradicated before they allow anyone to rent the apartment. And the same thing goes for lead paint in buildings. If tenants inhale the paint in large quantities over an extended period of time there are considerable health risks such as kidney damage, delayed development, and stunted growth. The health warnings about lead paint are mostly directed toward families with small children because they are most affected by the toxicity of the paint since their immune systems are still developing and vulnerable.
In addition to chemical substances threatening renter's home security, there are physical hazards that can harm tenants as well. For instance, if your apartment has a balcony higher than the second story of a building, the landlord needs to make sure that its high enough so that someone can't lean against it and loose their balance and fall over. They also must make sure that its secure enough that if someone were to lean against a railing that its strong enough to support a grown man's weight. There also must be a sign present to let people know how much weight the deck or balcony can hold so its not over loaded with people and made a health hazard in that it can collapse under the pressure. Sadly, there are countless home accidents that occur from this every day.
