Did you know that there are currently about 500 people worldwide who are connecting to the Internet using some sort of mobile broadband technology? This is almost double the number of people that were using any sort of Internet access merely ten years ago. It is predicted that the number of mobile Internet users will double again by the end of this year and then triple over the course of the next five years. At that time, approximately half of the world's population will be made up of mobile Internet users.
This exponential growth is very impressive, and it is the result of a number of different contributing factors. To start with, smart phones and compact laptops are becoming more popular and affordable all the time. And these are exactly the types of devices that allow their owners to make the most out of new mobile broadband technologies (after all, accessing a mobile connection from a desktop computer is really no different than using a wired service). It stands to reason that, the more people buy the products needed to access the Internet in this way, the more people will start actually doing so.
Another thing to keep in mind when thinking about all this is the fact that the majority of today's Internet users use a laptop rather than a desktop as their primary computer. This parallels (or echoes) the shift from land lines to cell phones that has been taking place over the past decade or so. In the past, the first way to reach someone would be by calling their land line. But these days you can get unlimited hours and free long-distance calling on your cell phone plan, making it a more appealing option than the traditional land line. Plus, you can take your cell phone everywhere you go. These are some of the reasons why many people in the United States have completely given up their land line. This is the same kind of thing that is happening right now with computers and the Internet. The thinking is that, since mobile broadband makes it possible to get online quickly from just about anywhere, what is the point of having a stationary service or device that does not accommodate your mobile lifestyle? Thus, desktops become excessive, unnecessary, just like home phones.
The rapid expansion of the mobile broadband industry is going to have a huge impact on the world. The Internet has already become the number one means of communication, especially on an international level, and having nearly constant access to it will take globalization one step further, bringing people from all over the world closer together, at least virtually. If something important happens in one country, people in an entirely separate hemisphere can find out about it almost instantaneously. This, for example, makes it harder for oppressive regimes to censor and stifle their citizens, and easier for the rest of the world to respond quickly and affectively in times of crisis, whether natural or man-made.
