For many Wi-Fi users, the term wireless Internet refers to a type of service that is unpredictable at best and downright tedious at times. However, it does not have to be that way. If you are fed up with having an Internet connection that consistently underperforms, especially in terms of data transfer rates, then you will be happy to learn that there are a few tricks you can do to help speed things up. Yes, believe it or not, even you can experience the instantaneous loading of web pages and rapid file transfers that others have been enjoying for years.
In a world in which everything seems to be going on at the speed of light, frustrating is the best word to describe the experience of having to wait several minutes for a simple web page to open. Fortunately, you do not have to put up with this any longer. Here are some tips to help you get the fastest speeds possible out of your wireless Internet connection:
1. Location, location, location. You may not realize it, but where you put your computer can have a huge impact on how fast (or slow, as the case may be) your service is. The general rule of thumb is that you want your computer to be in an area where there is nothing around that might obstruct the transfer of signals between it and your wireless router. When it comes to wireless Internet, close proximity to walls and other electronic devices can create obstacles, so you should try to do your computing as far away from them as possible. Obviously, you are not likely going to stick your computer in the middle of the room (especially if it is a desktop) – in fact corners, where you are next to not one but two walls, are the most common places where people choose to position their work stations. This will not be a huge problem as long as the router is on the same side of the wall as you are (if signals have to travel through the wall, this is when you can expect delays).
2. Stay grounded. Floors can be just as problematic as walls. In the same way that it is harder for signals to travel through walls, it is also difficult for them to be transmitted through floors. So, if your wireless Internet router is on the first floor, you will have faster access if you are also on the first floor. Likewise, if your router is upstairs, try to work upstairs if you can.
3. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. If you are accessing the Internet from a laptop, trial and error may be the best method for finding the strongest wireless Internet signals. Move around with your computer and try out different locations throughout your home or office to see which one has the strongest reception. One trick is to mount your router on the ceiling so that it has a good view of the whole room.
