Many people from foreign countries are already familiar with the benefits of satellite TV when it comes to international programming availability. Whether it's sports, entertainment or news, your dish can bring the best of international channels to your home. Especially when it comes to following your favorite sports team from abroad, or catching up on breaking news or events, it's important to have access to channels that aren't normally available with cable or over the air.

Getting these types of channels isn't hard - in fact most satellite TV receivers are already set up to receive them. The first step is to find out what channels you're most interested in, and what country they're from. Next, call your provider and ask about the international options from that country. You can likely purchase a package add-on that enables certain channels on your receiver, allowing you access to new international channels. In other cases, certain channels covering international news and sports from a particular region might also be available.

Following sporting events and breaking news about the latest match scores are enough to drive demand for international programming. There are many countries that are crazy for football (soccer), and if you're lucky enough to be from one of them - missing the latest "International Friendly" isn't really an option. Not to mention playoff and league coverage that might otherwise be available only online. With satellite TV though, you can probably find a network covering local sports in almost any country around the world.

It's worth considering the availability of international programming in high definition, however. If you're accustomed to seeing shows in crystal clear 1080P quality, you might be slightly disappointed with international channels. Because high-def channels haven't developed quite as quick outside of Europe and the US, local channels abroad are likely to come in as digital (and not necessary high-def). But, there are still great channels covering international sports available in HD, making it easy to see the highlights with great picture quality. Your provider should be able to provide a listing of which channels abroad are available for your HDTV - and which are only available with standard digital picture.

Especially if you're a foreign national living abroad, its tough enough to find things that make you feel at home. Having access to your favorite shows, sporting events and other entertainment can do a world of good in curing homesickness and bringing back great memories. Best of all, it doesn't take a plane flight to get that relief - it just takes a quick call to your satellite TV provider. In most cases, the packages are reasonably priced, and are widely available in most markets.

By calling your local direct.tv affiliate, you can easily find out about the international channel options available from a particular country. Or, you can even look online and find out the latest cable international channel lineup, and find out what programming is best for your family.
