Getting some friends together to watch the finale of a TV show or a sports match can be a great way to spend time together while at the same time enjoying something all of you love. An essential part of any gathering of friends will certainly be ample food and drink. However, there are definitely some foods that are better for satellite TV watching than others.

The first rule of choosing food for watching TV with friends is that you should avoid items that will require silverware. Think about how many friends typically arrive in your home whenever you watch TV together. No matter how big one's home is, you usually simply do not have enough seating for all your friends, their significant others, and any unexpected guests that might be tagging along. Thus, it seems when we have friends together, people always end up on floors, the arms of couches, and so on, meaning that they are not exactly in the best position to eat something that requires silverware without potentially spilling it all over your carpet or floor.

This goes to another point about choosing food for a TV party: try to stay away from items that require a lot of attention on the part of the eater. A second problem with food requiring silverware is that with a television blaring constantly during a party, it is easy to get distracted and make common, potentially messy mistakes with silverware that a careful eater would not otherwise make. Therefore, one should also stay away from sauces that can splash and stain if not carefully consumed. One does not have to stay away from all dips and sauces, of course, but things like tomato sauce should generally be avoided.

One common entertaining question is whether one should try to serve a full meal or just smaller snacks and finger food. Unless you are explicitly planning a dinner party and this is the expectation of all your guests, it is probably better to just with finger foods. The reason for this is that you simply do not know what your guests have been up to throughout their day, and whether they may have already eaten. Additionally, if you are getting together to watch a shorter, one-hour prime-time television show, it is unlikely that you are going to have time to serve a full meal in the course of an evening.

At satellite TV get-togethers it can also be helpful to serve a variety of different foods. Since no two people will have the same tastes, it is commonly expected that there will be more than one food item available at a TV-watching party. Additionally, since you will not necessarily know who has had a full meal and who not before your party, as noted above, you may want to serve a mix of heavier, more substantial foods (such as chicken wings) and lighter foods (such as cheese and crackers or vegetables and hummus dip).
