Moving to New York City was Mark's life-long dream. He loved music for as long as he could remember. To him, moving to New York signified a move towards his dream. He wanted to make music professionally, and he knew that as long as he lived in the middle of Kansas, he would never accomplish his dream.
The move meant so much more than simply leaving behind his family and friends. It was a journey into his future. He felt scared as well as invigorated at the same time. It was thrilling to imagine that he could actively pursue his dreams and make them happen. He didn't have to let his future develop itself without his own input. He would become an active participant in his own life.
Of course, as a young man in a new city, there were many things that Mark never thought about before making the move. His mind was focused on making music, not on landing a job that would pay all the bills in the meantime. He wasn't concerned about which neighborhood he would live in, nor about personal safety or home security. To him, the city was full of people and therefore not possibly dangerous. It was the attitude of youth and immaturity.
In fact, he wound up moving into one of the roughest areas of the city. To him, it was the best choice because the rent was relatively cheap. Granted, it was still over three times the amount he paid for his large apartment in the college town of Lawrence, Kansas. Yet, compared to what some of his new friends were paying in nicer areas of town, he was living cheaply. He felt like he could afford to sacrifice some of his personal safety and home security for the ability to pay $500 a month less for rent. He eventually found a job, about three months after moving to the city, and became self-sufficient. He didn't have to dig into his savings to stay afloat. Yet, he was still only making enough to cover his basic necessities. He wasn't able to buy clothes or keep up with the fashion all around him.
He soon realized that New York City was a hard city to live in, not only for its sheer expense but also for the hallow promises it offered. It offered its inhabitants the dream of city living, full of entertainment and fashion and music. Yet it cost so much to live that many of its residents, lured away from the country's interior by the promise of it all, were left without money to experience anything the city offered. Mark was relegated to a life of work. He had to work two jobs just to have extra spending money. His ability to be creative and make music diminished as well. It was a hard existence. Yet he loved it.
Then one day, while he was at work, his small studio apartment was broken into. He lost everything. The idea of installing a home alarm only occurred to Mark once. Since he didn't have a home phone and thought that the expense was unnecessary, he immediately dismissed the idea. It wound up being a big mistake. For now he was without clothes, the little furniture he had, and the savings he had stashed away in a jar under his bed. He was literally stripped of everything he had in the city except for the clothes on his back.
Of course his friends helped him out, and he eventually made it back on his feet. It was one of the many lessons learned during his first year in the big city. He would save money on location and amenities, but he would not penny-pinch when it came to home security. It was one lesson he could not afford to learn over again.
