Almost every kitchen renovation includes updating kitchen appliances. Kitchen appliances are a focal point of every kitchen, and they communicate a great deal about their owners to visitors. However, a visit to an appliance store can be a daunting experience, as there appear to be hundreds of different types of appliances, and thousands of models and styles. A small amount of preparation for the visit to the appliance store, however, can drastically reduce the number of options on the table for homeowners.

The first and most important thing to do when considering a new set of modern, technologically advanced kitchen appliances is to find a few of the least technologically-advanced tools in the house: the measuring tape, a pencil, and a pad of paper. Space limitations will often times eliminate many of the choices facing homeowners. If the kitchen being remodeled has limited space, it is of paramount importance to measure accurately. Many a homeowner has faced the embarrassing dilemma of having to explain to the deliverymen that they must have measured incorrectly, as the new refrigerator will not fit through a doorway.

In addition to the external measurements of appliances, it is important to consider the internal measurements of them as well. Homeowners must understand their needs. How much space a refrigerator needs to keep a family member from running to the grocery store three times per week, or how many dishes a new dishwasher needs to be able to clean in a cycle translate into how useful these appliances will actually be.

Energy bills are also a consideration when selecting kitchen appliances. Selecting a refrigerator large enough to feed a professional football team will not only look ridiculous, it will cost a homeowner a mountain of money in electric bills. Virtually every major manufacturer of kitchen appliances offers a line of energy-efficient appliances these days, meaning that through intelligent selection of appliances, homeowners can offset some of the cost of their kitchen remodel by way of lower energy bills. Furthermore, selection of energy-efficient appliances is great for the environment, and in some states energy-efficient appliances qualify homeowners for tax breaks.

Esthetics is always a part of kitchen remodel projects, and kitchen appliances are no exception. Kitchen appliances can be the focal point of a kitchen, or just sort of blend in to the background. Which is preferable is up to the homeowner, if a remodel is limited to new appliances, designer appliances can give the kitchen a whole new look. If new appliances are arriving along with new countertops, cabinets, and an expansion, neutrally designed appliances may be better off, blending in to their new surroundings.

Lastly, the features of the appliances themselves are not insignificant. Most of this will come down to personal preference. Different types of trays, storage racks, doors that open one way versus another, and various other features will often differentiate two similarly prices appliances. Also, given the size of the investment a homeowner makes in kitchen appliances, it is important to keep in mind the warranties offered by both the brand of appliance, and the store from which it was purchased. Saving $20 now will not make up for the headache of trying to explain to a company abroad that the store from which a dishwasher was purchased promised a warranty but is no longer in business.

Regardless of whether homeowners are facing a cabinet refacing, kitchen countertop replacement, or a complete remodel, a consultation with a remodeling expert can always help. Visit the nearest Sears to schedule a consultation for new ideas, price estimates, or any other general questions about kitchen remodeling projects.
