The Allen Family lived in the small town of Sweet Home, Oregon. They were about one hundred miles south of Portland, Oregon, and fifty miles north of Eugene, Oregon. They were not very far from the Pacific Ocean and also not very far from the beautiful mountains of the Cascade Range. Holly and Jim were the parents and they had two children, Susannah and Hunter. In Sweet Home, they owned a beautiful organic farm and also had a small vineyard. Holly was very down to earth and didn't want the children's minds to be polluted by television when they were young, so they did not have satellite television.
The family did have televisions in the house, but they only got the four major networks, and often times there wasn't anything on the television that the kids wanted to watch. As a result, they spent a lot of time outdoors, playing sports and in the winter taking advantage of the great skiing available close by. As they got older, it was obvious that they were going to be great athletes and they dominated the local children's athletic leagues.
Jim was not as down to earth as his wife and he really wanted to watch more television than what the networks had to offer. He and Holly didn't see eye to eye about the whole television thing, but he had cable at his office in town, so he could watch whatever he wanted when he was there. Holly said that she would relent if the cable company offered access at their house, but they both knew that would never happen because there weren't enough houses along their route to make it cost-effective for the cable company.
Most of their children's friends had satellite or cable television, so whenever they spent the afternoon or night at a friend's house, they would be able to watch the television. As they got older, Holly wasn't really able to prevent them from watching satellite television; she was just preventing them from watching when they were at home. Both Susannah and Hunter ended up moving east to go to high school at Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine where the focus was on skiing and improving their talent. After two years, Holly had trouble dealing with the separation and she and Jim bought a house in the very small town of Stow, Maine.
If they thought Sweet Home had been a small town, then Stow was a real shock because it had a total of less than 400 people. They were about an hour from the kid's school and it was easy for the kids to come home for vacations and holidays. The parents were happy to have them, but the kids were less than enthusiastic because there was nothing for them to do. They both had driver's licenses but they didn't have any friend close because their classmates mostly all lived out of state.
When they came home for Christmas Break they were greeted with a surprise that year. They noticed a new device that resembled a television receiver next to the television in the family room. When they went to their rooms, they discovered they also had the boxes connected to their televisions. They couldn't believe their eyes. Holly told them it was an early Christmas present because she knew that they were kind of bored in lonely living in the new town.
In addition to the hundreds of new channels that they had never before had in their home, they were able to upgrade their service to include broadband internet. After a day on the slopes they could come home and surf the web, chat with their friends online, and watch all the great television that they wanted. In the end, Holly was happy that she had relented because she was able to watch all of her favorite athletics too.
