Often times when criminals are out on the loose, they develop a keen ability to figure out what houses and businesses would make easy targets. Over their crime sprees, if they don't get caught first, criminals start to become even better at what they do, and they become highly skilled. Colton Harris-Moore, a.k.a. "the Barefoot Bandit," became really excellent at stealing things and escaping as he became a global fugitive. Moore's crime spree ended recently when the 19-year-old was arrested in the Bahamas. Clearly, Moore did an excellent job of scoping out what targets he could steal and get away with, but if more people had taken better home security measures, it's likely that he could have been caught much sooner.

At this point, the troubled young man will likely end up in prison for several years before he can start putting his life back on track. Moore has never been accused of physically injuring anyone and has only committed crimes that have hurt people's pocketbooks. He's well-known for stealing expensive items such as cars, boats and planes, which have enabled him to have dramatic escapes similar to ones that might be seen in a James Bond movie. Moore was recently captured in the Bahamas when police shot the motor of the boat he was in, but rather than act out violently with the gun he had on himself, he gave himself up peacefully. Moore is clearly quite intelligent and will hopefully be able to put his life back on track within the next few years, but it's a shame that he was able to commit so many crimes so easily. If his victims had only had good home security precautions in place, he would not have been able to get so far without being captured by the authorities. And as a result, he would not be facing so many charges or jail time right now.

Before flying to the Bahamas, it is suspected that Moore may have committed several burglaries around the Fort Wayne, Indiana area before stealing a plane. If homeowners in that area had only had a good home alarm system installed in their houses, they wouldn't have been targeted by Moore, who seems wise enough to have avoided targets where he thought he may have put himself at risk. Likewise, the majority of criminals who are aware that homeowners have installed home alarms are deterred from trying to break into those homes, which really reduces those homeowners' risk of being victimized. Then again, if Moore had tried to break into houses with home alarm systems, he would have most likely ended up being caught by the authorities. Until Moore speaks, it's impossible to know what communities he committed robberies in, and he may have even gone as far South within the U.S. as Tulsa, Oklahoma. If a teenager like Moore can commit such audacious thefts, that should be a sign to Americans all over that they need to step up and start doing a better job of protecting their own houses. That way, something like this can't happen to them.
