Protect Your Home From Sticky-Handed Employees

There is one moment in every homeowner’s life in which all of the home security measures that they have been so conscientious to enact go out the window: when they invite workers into their home. Whether they are repainting the basement, installing a satellite TV connection, or completely remodeling the kitchen, these people who spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars to install home alarms, build fences, and put up security doors are suddenly allowing complete strangers into their homes with essentially unrestricted access to their property and their belongings. But this ironic situation is, in many ways, unavoidable. Even if you are not planning on doing any massive remodeling projects, if you live in any home for long enough, you are certainly going to have some point during which you have issues with the electrical system, or with a leak in the roof, etcetera. So how do you maintain the security of your property while allowing employees into your home?



The good news is that most of the strategies that you want to use will simply be extensions of the precautions you already take when protecting your home security. For example, you want to have a good home alarm system, one with features that allow specific people to have different pass codes. This means that if the employees have to come in during the day when you are at work, instead of giving the head of the work crew the code to disarm your alarm at any time, you can specially create one for him or her so that he or she can only use it at a specific time range, as decided by you. So perhaps the code "55559" can only be used between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. That way, when you get home from work at night, another employee cannot just let himself in and help himself to your stuff. And once the work is over, you can disable that pass code so that the crew cannot come over and loot the place on another day when you are way at work. Moreover, with these individualized pass codes, you will be able to tell when people use them to log in, as the home alarm security system will keep a record of that. So if the workers show up two hours late, you will know that, and can avoid getting billed for work they did not complete.



Another important home security tip is keeping a safe in your house for small valuables. Stick-fingered employees might be quite tempted if they see a pile of cash lying around, or even other portable valuables like jewelry, passports, cell phones, cameras, MP3 players, and other small electronics. They might even figure that in certain cases, such as a gold bracelet that you only wear on special occasions, you might not even notice when something is missing, which means that it truly will be an easy piece to lift. But if you lock it up in the safe, there is no way that they will be able to reach it. It is not a bad idea to keep certain items such as passports in the safe at all times, just in case.
