For years, Bill Maher has brought honest and unabashed discussions to the country’s living rooms. Because of his willingness to discuss sensitive subjects without holding punches, he is often known as a controversial figure. After his long running panel show "Politically Incorrect" was cancelled by network executives, he found the ideal venue for his poignant rants on HBO, where he is unhindered by the rigors of censorship. With the freedom to tackle any subject with full candor, "Real Time with Bill Maher" engages the audience with biting comedy and thorough debates.

Maher begins each program with a comedic monologue, followed by a one-on-one interview with a single guest, usually via satellite tv on a high definition screen above the stage, but sometimes in person in the studio. After loosening up the live studio audience, the interview sets the tone with heady discussion of topics with which the guest is associated. Depending on the guest, the interview may take the form of a spirited argument, but Maher is careful to extend respect to those he’s invited to the show.

Each week the show features a panel of three opinionated guests. The panel is comprised of actors, politicians, journalists, authors and figures from the world of sports.. Upon conclusion of the interview segment, Maher introduces his guests and presents a topic for discussion by the panel. This portion of the show allows celebrities and experts in a variety of subjects to speak truthfully about a wide range of current events. While lightheartedness and humor generally rules the tone of the dialogue, occasionally, more passionate arguments arise, prompting Maher to reassert control.

Since Maher is a comedian at heart and continues to tour as a stand up comic, humor is central to the show’s style. He often appears in prerecorded skits that satirize a wide variety of current events and items from popular culture. Whether pointing out the silliness of the latest fads or lampooning politicians and celebrities, the sketches on the show inject laughter even when discussions revolve around more serious topics.

Each show is rounded out by a hysterical segment called "New Rules" in which Maher makes declarations about a variety of public behaviors relevant to the news cycle. After several brief points that often bring chuckles from the panel of experts as well as the audience, Maher makes a final statement in greater detail and sinks his teeth in to important issues While still filled with biting humor, the final rant leaves the audience with a strong position to consider as the credits roll.

Since HBO is a premium channel, it is only available to cable and satellite tv viewers that subscribe. The opportunity to encounter no-holds-barred discussions about the most important issues facing the country is valuable enough to encourage new subscriptions to satellite tv and extended cable packages that aren’t bound by the strict limitations of censorship found on network stations and basic cable.

Freedom of speech is one of the cornerstones of our democracy, and Bill Maher’s is one of the few voices willing to speak truth to power. Audiences may disagree with his views on many subjects, but none can dispute that Real Time is a great forum for American discourse.
