Jake and his wife Veronica had always lived in big cities. Jake was born and raised in Manhattan and his Veronica in the suburbs of Boston. They met in college and eventually married and settled down in New York City. Jake worked downtown as an attorney and Veronica stayed home, raising a young family. They enjoyed the fact that everything they needed and wanted was within fifteen minutes walking distance. What they eventually came to dislike was the amount of traffic, people, pollution, and crime.

Jake and Veronica pondered making a move for several years. It just didn't seem feasible since Jake had spent nearly ten years at the firm and had recently been made partner. A large steady stream of cash was now coming in, much larger than before, and they were able to live quite comfortably, even in the middle of New York City. However, they nonetheless began to turn their sights to the country.

Veronica's parents had moved out of Boston several years prior. They found a nice country house about 40 miles outside of city limits. It was part of a municipality, and therefore had all the basic amenities. About the only thing it did not have was high speed DSL cable since the town had not yet installed the underground cable. Not even all of Boston had DSL cable, much less an hour and a half outside the city. Instead they had hooked their house up to satellite Internet. Through their positive experience in the country communicated to Veronica periodically, she and Jake decided that they, too, could make the move.

Of course, this meant a complete career shift for Jake. He had actually fallen out of love with his job over the past few years trying to make partner. Now that he was a partner at one of the most respected firms in the country, he had simply lost his drive. The money was good, but apart from that he became restless. Veronica had noticed the change and began encouraging him to look for a career he would be happy in but would also make them money. Eventually they decided that he would start a consulting business and would be able to work from home three or four days of the week. He would commute into New York and stay the night in a hotel the other two days per week. He would travel two or three times per month out of state or out of country. It was perfect because he already had made connections all over the world through his job at the firm.

Of course, among many other practical considerations they had to make, Jake and Veronica got connected to high speed Internet through satellite broadband. This allowed him to work from home on a fast and dependable Internet connection. The satellite Internet allowed him to stay connected to clients and business partners through video chat, practically removing the distance between him and his clients and partners in large cities across the globe. They would be stuck in some large building in the middle of a busy downtown and he would be reclining in his home office chair, while his children were in the next room playing.

Satellite broadband played a large part in allowing Jake and Veronica to be creative about their financial future. It gave Jake the flexibility to leave the city and still support his family.
