For years, scientists and environmentalists have been warning Americans that they need to start thinking about how to create energy savings in their own homes so that they consume less and in so doing help protect the environment. But comfort and relative luxury is practically considered a birthright in the United States. Subsequently, that message about energy savings has not hit really hit home until recently, when high oil prices and a bum economy have made it so that many people are looking to save money by cutting back on their consumption. Luckily, there are a few simple steps that you can take in order to cut back and reduce the number that you see on your energy bill every month. Here are some ways to cut back and see some real savings, even as energy prices continue to climb.

1. Install double-paned windows

You have probably heard the saying that you have to spend money in order to make money. Well, sometimes you have to spend money in order to save money, too! Investing in double-paned windows is a great wait to increase the energy efficiency of your house. This way, it will trap the heat more efficiently in the winter, and keep the hot air out in the summer. With double-paned windows, you will have to spend less on heating and cooling because these appliances will not have to work as hard to regulate to the temperature to your satisfaction.

2. Invest in a time-controlled thermostat

Many American families now have centralized heating and cooling systems in their homes, which help to keep them at an ideal temperature. With older systems, if you decided that you want your house at 70 degrees, that is the temperature at which it will stay all day and all night, through the winter and the summer alike. But when you are out of the house at work, or when you are sleeping at night, do you really need the temperature to stay that way? If you get a time-controlled thermostat, you can set it so that in the winter the temperature automatically drops to, say, 60 degrees at night or during the day. Then, in the summer, you can let it creep up to 75 or 80 when you are at work, but keep it at a cooler 70 at night so that you can sleep comfortably. By occasionally allowing the temperature to sync up more with the outside environment, you are using fewer resources to regulate your house.

3. Open up your drapes on sunny winter days; close them in the summer

If you have gained one thing from this article, it is that temperature regulation is the key to energy savings. It is incredible what a difference sunlight or the lack thereof will make in the comfort of the room. In the winter, allowing sunlight in during the day by keeping the drapes open will help heat up your house naturally. Then remember to close them after dark to aid in your house’s insulation. In the summer, blocking out the sunlight can help to keep your house nice and cool.
