People who live in Seattle and the surrounding suburbs are happy to be able to enjoy a relatively safe American city. They live in the beautiful Northwestern United States, where ocean, bay, and mountain are all in their backyard, and the people have a peaceful, laidback vibe that permeates most of their ways of being, from daily activities to their outgoing nature.
But this does not mean that Seattle is without any kind of problems. Indeed, like any major American city, Seattle has its fare share of issues with violence and drugs. Use of highly addictive drugs like heroin is frequent. Not only that, but assaults, robberies, home invasions, and rapes do occur here – although not frequently enough to send residents into a panic or to declare a national emergency. There is certainly no need to fear walking alone around one’s neighborhood (in most cases), for example, or to build a 6-food high fence around one’s property, or to hire an armed guard, or to move into a gated community. The situation does not require such extreme action, and one of th beautiful things about living in Seattle and its surrounding suburbs is that you can count on escaping the more negative aspects of urban living that one might encounter in Detroit or Baltimore. That said, there are a few measures that one can and should take to ensure his or her family’s home security. You do not want to be paranoid, but you also do not want to be naïve. One extreme is no more productive than the other, and what you are looking for in matters of personal and home security is finding a way to strike a balance that feels comfortable and workable to you.
One way that many Seattle residents are finding they are able to feel a bit more comfortable in their neighborhoods is buy setting up a basic home security system in their houses. They are not doing anything too fancy or expensive – they are simply going to their local home security experts and getting basic packages like alarm systems. Some people are opting for a few extra features, like panic buttons, motion detectors, or security cameras. Others find it useful to be able to have different security codes for the devices, so that they can allow their cleaning lady to activate and deactivate the system during the daytime without knowing how to turn off the alarm when the family is out of town on vacation all of the way across the country in Florida, for example. But regardless of how far you want to go with extra precautions and features, just having an alarm is a great start, and can allow you to gain peace of mind when you go to sleep at night or head out for a day of work or go away for a long weekend into the woods of Washington State. So, Seattle residents, follow the lead of your responsible neighbors and consider arming your house against those who would want to invade it.
