Even six years after its series finale, dedicated viewers keep returning to HBO through cable and satellite TV to relive their favorite moments of this epic show. Sex and the City was not merely good entertainment, although good entertainment it was. It was more than that. It was a guide to dating that taught women that they weren't the only ones with troubled love lives and even more importantly, that it's okay to be as promiscuous as some men and not fall victim to the double-standard.

Partially based on the book of the same name by Candace Bushnell, the show is narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw via her column "Sex and the City." The show centers around Carrie and her 3 best friends, Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) on their search for love and happiness. All four of the characters play very different roles, Miranda being the cynical, over-worked lawyer, Samantha as the super-promiscuous public relations practitioner, and Charlotte as a hopeless romantic with conventional views on love. Carrie acts as a mix of the three personalities and is harder to pinpoint as a stereotype.

The women are often seen drinking and dining in a number of New York City's hot spots where they discuss their love lives and sexual desires and fantasies. More often than not one of the women will bring up a particular problem with their current love affair, some of them serving to be quite humorous. One of them entitled "The Freak Show" which explores whether every man in Manhattan has an inner-freak, putting women's minds at ease as to whether they're just simply freak magnets.

Over its six season series, the show was nominated for over 50 Emmy Awards. Of the seven awards Sex and the City did take home were two for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series, one for Costumes, one for Outstand Comedy Series, one for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, one for Sarah Jessica Parker as Oustanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and one for Cynthia Nixon as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. It has also been nominated for 24 Gold Globe Awards, eight of which it took home, including Best TV Series-Musical or Comedy, four for Sarah Jessica Parker as Best Actress in a TV Series-Musical or Comedy, and Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series or Movie for Kim Cattrall. It also made Time magazine's "100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME" list.

Although the series can be found on syndication networks such as TBS, WGN and other local stations, an upgrade to cable or satellite TV is recommended to get the full experience on HBO or high definition HBO, as many scenes are edited for content.

The show's persistent popularity gave birth to the film Sex and the City in 2008, picking up four years after the series finale left off. Due to the success of the film, a sequel called Sex and the City 2 is set to be released in May of 2010.
