It used to be that keeping in touch with friends and family living far away was a tremendous challenge. Long distance phone calls were expensive and letters took time. In the globalized world of today, too, it is more and more common for families to live on opposite sides of the world. Luckily, though, with the incredible technology of satellite internet, there are hundreds of cheap, easy ways to stay in touch with your loved ones no matter where in the world they might be.

Of course, one of the most common and well-known was of keeping in touch is with e-mail. It is hard to imagine that just 15 years ago virtually no one had e-mail. Even better, with a high speed satellite internet connection you can send large attachments, too, like pictures of your new baby! Many of the e-mail systems like Gmail come with "chat" functions, as well. These functions allow you to message your contacts instantly, so you can "speak" to them by typing messages back and forth and, unlike e-mail, have real-time conversations with them.

Another great way to keep up to date on what is going on with your friends and family is through Facebook. People use Facebook to post pictures, status updates, and other information about themselves for their "friends" to see. You can also use Facebook to post public messages on the person's "wall" or to send private messages to people, too. Basically, through Facebook, you can stay up to date on what your friends have been up to- find out about that new job, look at vacation pictures, as much (or as little) as the person wants to post.

One of the newer, and perhaps most truly revolutionary, ways of keeping in touch through high speed satellite internet is Skype. Skype uses voice over internet protocol technology to operate like a phone but via your computer. By getting yourself an inexpensive computer microphone and signing up for a Skype account, you can talk to anyone anywhere in the world for free if they have a Skype account as well. Even if they don't, you can still talk to them for a few cents a minute.

Or, are you going away for a while, either moving abroad or on a long vacation, and want to be able to keep your friends and family updated on your travels? A great way is to create a blog. A blog is basically like your own website, where you can write text, post pictures, attach links and upload videos. It is in many ways a public, multi-media journal. Blogs are a great way to be able to disseminate updates to all your friends and family quickly and easily without having to send out mass e-mails or spend a small fortune calling all of them individually. Also, when you are done with your trip, you already have a record of all your travels!

Of course, these are just a few of the ways that high speed satellite internet can help keep you connected, but there are literally hundreds!
