Adding a new high definition television set to your home entertainment system is always an exciting moment. The sleek flat-screen design looks great when the TV is turned off, and the lifelike images that seem to pop off the screen are even more enthralling to behold once you push the on button. Of course, if you have the opportunity to upgrade in terms of the size of your screen, the whole experience becomes proportionally even better. Vivid colors and sharp lines make for an overall home entertainment experience that is more akin to a trip to the movie theater than an afternoon or evening spent sitting in your living or family room. And nowadays the number of channels that are broadcast in the highest resolution possible is quite large.

These days, even local channels can now be viewed in high definition format. However, you may notice that there are sometimes reception problems with doing so. In fact, even subscription services like cable and satellite television can sometimes let you down. Even with a seemingly endless lineup of channels and programming to choose from, subscribers often find themselves flipping through them and not being able to find anything that they want to watch, regardless of how crystal clear the images may be. Luckily, there is another place you can look to find the interesting high definition programming you are looking for.

Most people these days have some form of high-speed Internet, such as DSL or cable, in their home. Wired broadband has long been considered a great tool for working and communicating with friends and family members, but now it can also be used as a means of watching HD television. These days, video sharing sites abound, and there are myriad shows and movies that can be streamed in practically no time at all. And if you do not want to watch these shows on your computer screen, there are now a couple ways in which you can route them directly to be displayed on your television screen instead.

The first way is to use a direct connection. A direct connection is when you hook up a computer video port to the television itself. The video card on your computer includes an extra DVI (Digital Video Interface) or HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) port, then you can use extension-length cables to accomplish this connection. This method is great because it is so user-friendly. The connection is easy to establish, and the television is then recognized by the computer as an additional monitor, meaning that you do not have to mess around with reconfiguration. The drawbacks are the length of cable needed, the possibility of experiencing incompatible resolutions, and the fact that you have to control the TV through the computer (this can be especially problematic if they are located in separate rooms).

The other option is to use a media interface between the two devices. It is possible to achieve this by using either an Ethernet cord or a wireless router.
