After Sam Baldwin (played by Hanks) tragically loses his wife and can't move past his grief, his young son convinces him to get on the radio and talk about his story, in the hopes of finding a new wife. Annie Reid (played by Ryan) lives in Baltimore but falls for Sam after hearing his story. It is an incredibly romantic tale of two people who fall in love in an incredibly unlikely manner.

Philadelphia (1993)- Hanks won an Oscar for his heartbreaking portrayal of Andrew Beckett, an HIV positive lawyer who is fired by his firm. Knowing that his condition was the catalyst that caused his dismissal, he takes his former employers to court and ultimately fights for the justice of all people living with HIV. It is an extremely powerful and important film that she be on everyone's must-see list.

Forrest Gump (1994)- This incredible and well-loved film won Hanks another Best Actor Oscar. As Forrest Gump, a man with a low IQ but an incredible amount of heart, Hanks was captivating and extremely touching. The film tells the story of his incredible life, as he is accidentally present for some of the most significant events in our nation's history. It is a classic for the ages.


Saving Private Ryan (1998)- An epic World War II film from legendary director Steven Spielberg, about a group of US soldiers who must rescue Private James Francis Ryan after all his brothers have been killed in action. The battle scenes are gory, but the film is incredibly powerful. Watch it in high definition to get the full effect.

Charlie Wilson's War (2007)- This is a fantastic political film about the true story of Texas congressman Charlie Wilson's dealings in Afghanistan that ultimately led to some dire consequences. It is humorous, but also very interesting and poignant. Hanks is spot on as the womanizing congressman and truly makes the film a hit.
