It's no secret that New Yorkers are of the opinion that theirs is one of the greatest cities in the history of western civilization. But what people might not realize is just how much it is ingrained in visual culture, not just on the silver screen, but at home. Whether it's watching some classic "Seinfeld" reruns or the news that Larry David has decided to move the last season of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" from LA to New York, there's plenty of television to watch on one's HDTV set that is set in Manhattan or the other boroughs. For those who aren't quite sure where to begin their voyage of classic television that happens to be based in the Big Apple, here are five great shows for those all over the country to enjoy.
#1 - Nurse Jackie. While emergency rooms aren't new as far as settings for television shows are concerned, "Nurse Jackie" is a different kind of approach to talking about the fast-paced environment where life or death is all in a day's work. Thank the clever writers, some of whom are veterans of other fabulous shows like "Six Feet Under" for making this one of the best dark comedies currently on satellite tv.
#2 - 30 Rock. The quintessential New York comedy of right now, "30 Rock" is something worth watching on satellite tv, no matter what. With an incredible job by Alec Baldwin on every episode, the comic timing of Tina Fey, and a great cast that does an excellent job with some of the most solid writing on television, it's the one thing that might save NBC from its slump.
#3 - Flight of the Conchords. An HBO comedy designed for the quirky hipster set, this show follows an aspiring band from New Zealand who are trying to make their dreams into their living. With the chance to burst into song at random moments, they make their way around the city, sharing a small apartment and hanging out at used record stores. It's probably a rather accurate way of looking at things for many aspiring graduates with degrees in liberal arts and not much else to offer.
#4 - Will & Grace. This was one of the most long-living and groundbreaking sitcoms out there, and while others might have been more famous for their unrealistic approach to spacious apartment living in Manhattan ("Friends") at least in this scenario, it made since that a wealthy woman and a lawyer might be able to afford some comfortable digs. Hilarious, witty, and occasionally grating, it's a show that broke down barriers while managing to land itself the chance to be syndicated on satellite tv indefinitely
#5 - How to Make it in America. Day jobs and an endless hustle in the evening happens to be a fact of life for plenty of the under-40 set who are living in Brooklyn and Manhattan. And HBO managed to do a great job of crafting a show that is focused on when people who are creative try to wheel and deal while ensuring that their day job never again needs to be in the service industry. It's the kind of show that ends up begrudgingly inspirational, even if it might only appeal to a particular audience.
