The internet connectivity landscape has evolved a lot over the last 20 years, from its humble beginnings in dial-up to the high speed cellular options that are available today. The internet itself was what spurned that evolution because it always offers increasing functionality to people. In any case, there are no shortage of connectivity options for people who are in the market for internet now, but which option would be best for you? In order to discern which one that would be, you have to learn more about the history of both wired and wireless internet connectivity first.

In the beginning, there was dial-up and since it was the only option that was available for most people, it was good enough. It wasn't fast by any stretch, but the internet wasn't all that sophisticated then either so it didn't matter too much. As time went on though, newer wired options started to become available. People were pushing for broadband internet because it fixed all the flaws that dial-up had. For example, broadband promised much higher transfer rates and much more reliable connectivity overall. Eventually, cable and DSL became popular because of their speed and price. After a while though, it became clear that wires could only offer so much and that wireless internet options would need to be explored.

The only real wireless options available now all make use of cellular technology. Even though 3G is available as an internet connection and has been around for several years now, it was never meant to be used that way. It was mostly meant to be an internet connection for cell phones and was marketed as such. Nevertheless, the fact of the matter is that it actually can be used as a dedicated internet connection too. Unfortunately, it's not quite fast enough to be a valid contender on its own.

There were a lot of lessons to be learned from 3G, and the next iteration of cellular technology improved on those things. Known as 4G, it represents the next generation of internet connectivity because of all the new features it has. Not only does it give you speeds comparable to those offered by cable and DSL, but it also allows you to use the internet in a completely wireless way all across your city. The only issue that you have to take into account is availability. Although 3G and most wired connections are widely available all throughout the country, 4G is still rolling out nationwide. It's quite possible that your city doesn't even have coverage yet, though it is equally possible that it does. You just can't know for sure unless you consult a coverage map online. Such a map will be able to tell you whether your city has signal and where you can expect it to be good.

Should you sign up for cellular internet if it's available? You definitely should, even if you'd have to break a contract. You don't have to pay for any additional services like you have to with cable or DSL, so you could cancel your cable TV or phone line and start saving right away. The main reason you should sign up though is so you can finally start enjoying the next generation of wireless internet.
