As Internet connections continue to get faster and more flexible, working remotely is becoming more and more convenient (and, in turn, more and more popular). But is it safe? One thing that anyone who is considering telecommuting should ask themselves is, "What is the worst thing that could happen if I lost my laptop or if the smart phone that I use for work were stolen from me?" This is an especially important inquiry if the Internet connections you work from tend to be public, unprotected ones. Securing your mobile broadband device – no matter what size, shape, or form it may be – as well as the information housed inside of it is a crucial responsibility that no mobile worker should shirk. Here are some tips for keeping your equipment and data out of harm’s way:

1. Be cautious about what type of information you save on your laptop or other mobile broadband device. Do not store any private or sensitive data on your computer or smart phone unless it is absolutely necessary that you do. The types of information that you should avoid storing on these devices if possible include confidential company or client information and any personal data that could potentially be used to steal your identity, such as tax records, your social security number, bank and credit card numbers and PINs, and even just the names and birthdays of you and your family members.

2. Take measures to ensure that all of your passwords and login IDs are protected to the best of your ability. You may be tempted to save a file on your desktop with all your login information listed on it so that you have it in case you forget it, but this is actually a very dangerous thing to do. If you do this and someone gets a hold of your mobile broadband device, they will not even need to be a hacker to access this information, and once they have it, they can do a lot of damage that will be extremely difficult for you to undo. It is also a good idea to opt out of any automatic password-remembering functions that may be available on your computer, and to use some sort of password management software to keep track of your passwords instead. When in doubt, remember the old saying that states that it is much better to be safe now than sorry later.

3. Do not underestimate the importance of backing up your files. While many people may never end up having to use their backed up files, those that have them and do not use them are better off than those who do not have them and find themselves in an emergency situation. If someone steals important information from you through your mobile broadband connection, having extra electronic copies of essential documents and other files can be a life saver. You should also be diligent about your security updates. When it comes to mobile broadband safety, staying on top of maintenance is the best way to avoid problems down the line.
