While Jackson, Mississippi may never top the lists as one of the most dangerous cities in America, it is nonetheless a city where dangerous crimes happen. Over the years the population of Jackson has decreased while crime has increased drastically. In 2008, there were twice as many property crimes as in 2006, and the number continues to grow. Some blame tough economic times, other the disintegration of the country’s moral fiber, while still others blame a lack of education. Whatever the reason, homeowners and families in Jackson aren’t quite sure how to go about protecting themselves. With around 30,000 serious crimes such as robbery, rape, property crime and burglary occurring every year, it means at least 1 in every 5 Jackson residents will experience crime first hand this year, and perhaps more. To say that Jackson, Mississippi residents should be worried about home security is to say the least.

Knowing that there are dangers out there, many people in Jackson, Mississippi and other big cities and urban centers around the country have quite simply chosen to pick up and move over the last several years. More and more families are heading to rural and suburban areas where the crime rates are down and the schools are better funded, for now. The more that people flee from the cities the more than crime and desperation will follow. Moving from the city to the suburbs may be a temporary fix to get children out of high school or finish out a career to retirement, but it’s no long term solution. The fact that the nationwide average for residential intrusions has reached one every 15 seconds or so (and some say more often) is enough to send many running for rural communities and fast.

Instead of running away from what is becoming an increasingly dangerous world, not just an increasingly dangerous city, homeowners and their families can take simple protection measures to decrease their chances of falling victim to a criminal or crime. Begin by installing a home alarm system that includes flood and fire protection. Such a system’s signage will deter the majority of criminals from even attempting a property crime, burglary or other intrusion. Those who are not deterred, will be limited in their effectiveness with the authorities immediately on their trail. A monitored system allows for instant access to security personnel, meaning the home is protected even while you’re away during the day.

An important rule of thumb is that home security should be viewed as an ‘onion’ and not an ‘egg shell.’ While egg shells are thin and can easily be broken, an onion requires time and peeling to access the center. Use the analogy to think about your home. Would a thief have to get through many layers of protection and security to reach you, your belongings, or your loved ones, or would it be as simple as breaking a pane of glass and unlatching the patio door? Some ‘onion-like’ protection measures include motion detector lighting, perimeter fencing, landscaping to increase the difficultly of access, real security cameras (or fake ones!) or even the family dog.
