All sports have their prodigies. Youngsters that excel at a sport are not that rare, and hundreds have been labeled as “the next big thing” while still riding the bus to school. Due to growth spurts (or lack of), laziness or simply because they peaked at a young age, very few of these young stars are able to live up to the hype. One of the rare exceptions is LeBron James.
LeBron James became one the most talked about prodigies at the age of 16 when Sports Illustrated featured him on their cover, touting him as a future basketball star. When ESPN decided to broadcast some of his high school games, America got their first glimpse of his ridiculous raw talent. Several other players have made the jump from high school to the NBA, but they were all skin and bones and looked like high schoolers. LeBron, on the other hand, had the build of a seasoned NBA veteran and looked like he was in his mid-20s. This obvious advantage had sports writers across the country drooling over what he might be capable of.
LeBron entered the NBA straight out of high school, and thanks to an enormous endorsement contract with Nike, his face was billboards around the country before he had even logged a minute in a game. No other athlete in any sports had garnered this much attention before they played their first game, and the expectations for the 18 year old LeBron seemed too big to live up to. While many might have cracked under the pressure, LeBron excelled and claimed Rookie of the Year honors in his first season.
His muscular frame allowed him to adjust to the physical NBA game much faster than similar players his age, and he adapted quickly. Showing marked improvement each year, he quickly became one of the NBA’s biggest stars. Doubts about his shooting and defense disappeared as he spent hours in the offseason improving his game.
LeBron’s impact turned his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers from perennial bottom-feeders to contenders in a matter of a few seasons. In 2007, he led Cleveland to their first ever Finals appearance, but fell to the San Antonio Spurs in 4 games.
Undeterred, LeBron continued to elevate his game and helped the U.S.A. basketball team win gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. In 2009 he was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player and helped Cleveland post the best regular season record. The Cavs fell short again though, not advancing past the Eastern Conference Finals.
This season, LeBron has again led the Cavs to the best record, and hopes to avenge last year’s playoff loss. A player’s greatness in the NBA is measured first and foremost by championships won, and LeBron needs to only do that to cement his place and one of the greatest players ever.
