After exhausting all of his other options, Crowe enters the ring again and surprisingly starts to win matches. Americans love him because they see him as an inspiration to their own lives, but he has to go up against a very strong opponent who is famous for having killed two other boxers in the ring. 2000's Gladiator was the film that earned Crowe his Oscar for best leading actor. In it, Crowe stars as the Roman General Maximus, who has a great career and a loving family. When the Emperor dies, it is revealed that he left his kingdom to Crowe's character instead of to his only son. The son though, is a power-hungry heir so he has Crowe's character attacked and captured and his family murdered. Once Crowe is imprisoned, he becomes a slave who is forced to fight as a gladiator. He has to endure battle after battle in front of spectators inside an arena, and if Crowe doesn't kill those he comes up against, he will be killed by his competitor. While Crowe continues to win battle after battle, he also plots to one day regain control of the throne that was rightfully his when the Emperor died. This powerful action and drama was so great that it took home 5 Oscars and had another 7 Oscar nominations!
