A uniquely Internet phenomenon has been the emergence of "viral videos," videos which receive a large amount of notoriety and attention despite not having the benefit of a formal publicity campaign. For some unexplainable reason, a large number of the Internet's hottest viral videos have to do with cats. Use your wireless Internet service to catch up on all of the videos below, and discuss these extraordinary members of the feline family with your friends.

Nora, a cat residing in Connecticut, has gained a measure of Internet fame for videos which show her "playing" a piano. While the cat is obviously not memorizing complex pieces, or reading music, she does seem to tap the piano's keys in her video in a reasonably rhythmic, sonorous way, to the point where her human caretaker is actually able to accompany her on their home's second piano. One composer has actually written a piece to be accompanied by Nora, and the Times of London has compared Nora's playing to the repetitive, chromatic style of noted avant-garde composer Philip Glass. The original Nora video, uploaded in 2007, has over 21 million views on YouTube.

Another cat video that has gained quite a bit of fame is a video of two cats "chatting," which has gained over 40 million views since being uploaded in June 2007. While cat owners know that cats have a vocabulary considerably wider than the classic "meow," including a variety of clicks, grunts, and growls, cats do not often appear to be having anything resembling a human conversation. However, this video shows two cats sitting close to each other who appear to be responding to each other's communications much as two humans would. While any owner of multiple cats knows that cats in the same household communicate through sniffing and grooming each other (and the occasional piercing wail when one or the other cat is in trouble!), extended conversations among cats are very rare. An Internet video like this one, which shows something cute and yet out of the ordinary, is usually on the right track to become a fairly big hit.

A third, more recent internet cat phenomenon is a video of two cats who appear to be playing the human children's game "pattycake." Again, while it is common for two cats in the same household to swat and each other and engage in behaviors that people would interpret as "play," cats rarely exhibit the kind of focused determination on their task that they do in this video. Although this video has only 1 million views since being uploaded in 2008, a hilarious 2010 video with a voice-over interpretation of what the cats might be saying has garnered nearly 10 million views. This video in particular is a great example of how people are using the Internet to make viral videos even better, adding their own spin quickly and easily with the use of simple production equipment.
